News From Hawaii, Jan 2002

Congratulations to Ann Bauer for participating in her first marathon. With a time of approximately eight hours and 55 minutes, Ann finished the event in true Hawaiian style. The following photo is compliments of the official Honolulu Marathon web site, and shows Ann crossing the finish line.

Mary, Mark and Brindly were also in Hawaii to root for Ann and offer race support. Brindly did a great job of stocking and operating the support vehicle. We traced the route the day before the race and planned out where we could meet Ann for pit stops. On race day, Brindly made sure Ann had plenty of ice, cold water and high protein race snacks.

Ann completed the race with her friend Jackie. They began the race early in the morning with a start time of five AM. There were approximately 19,499 runners crossing the start line, so the racers started in waves. An amazing total of 19,236 racers completed the 26 mile Marathon.

Runners were tracked via a sensor laced to their shoe. There were computerized tracking boxes set up along the route to keep track of everyone's time. This would explain why Ann's clock time in the photo (see picture galleries) is over nine hours, but her official finish time was 8 hours 55 minutes. Ann did a great job! She asked our publication to pass along thanks to all the family members who were able to support her via their pledge benefiting the Leukemia society.

Other Diversions

Once the race was over the four of us had pizza in Mary and Marks Room at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. If you ever go to Waikiki we would recommend staying there. The Hotel provides good service and there is plenty of beach, food and shopping within walking distance. Just stay away from the Seventeen dollar breakfast buffet at the hotel. Yikes!

The next couple of days after the race we were able to get away from our hotel and see some other great sites. One nice diversion was the Foster Botanical Gardens. The property has many many types of trees and plants we found interesting to look at. One memorable tree was a sausage tree. If you look closely, you will notice pods on the tree that look like giant sausages.

We also went the Polynesian Cultural Center where we saw shows and exhibits celebrating the culture and diversity of all the Polynesian islands. While some of the shows seemed dated, the experience was worthwhile. We also stopped at the Dole pineapple plantation for some pineapple juice and photos of pineapple people.

If you want more information on the race visit the official
Honolulu Marathon web site. It's a great site! You can even look up Ann's race stats and see a few photos of Ann taken by the official race photographers. It's worth a look.
