Visit to the Andrades

Guest Columnist Mary Hultgren:

In October Curlie, Katie, John, Carolyn and I all had the great fortune to enjoy a wonderful evening up at the Andrades.

Veronica is doing great. She turned 80 last year and was feeling spry enough to make deviled eggs and her famous Portuguese beans for dinner. Tony is married to a great gal named Diana who grew up in the San Jose area and attended Silver Creek High School. They have just announced that they are expecting their first child.

Tony has become an excellent cook and we were treated to a regional specialty from Gus's home island of Madeira. We helped skewer the meat between fresh bay leaves as seen in one of the photos. Gus passed away two years ago, but according to Veronica it was a true blessing. Gus had spent some time in a home that he kept trying to run away from. Tony would walk him around the Higuera property and Gus was convinced they were just renters. A beautiful memorial basket is displayed in their dining room.

They have built an $8 million 7,000 sq. foot house in our old orchard. The Bauer house looks great. It sold to the most recent couple about two years ago for $600,000. The yard is beautifully landscaped, the driveway is newly paved, the retaining wall looks great and they have a multi-tiered deck now in the back. According to Dan Geroci they have however had major problems with our old septic system!

Dan and Katie Geroci are doing well at 87 and 84 years of age. Pat Johnson recently turned 70. Lynn Johnson and her husband now live with Pat along with their toddler Twins. Shirley Rushane has passed away, but Denise and her husband are now living with Al. Denise still works at Peter‘s Bakery. The Delponte orchards only produced 300 boxes of apricots this year so they no longer run the drying operation in the back. Dennis is a very successful divorce attorney in downtown San Jose. Kathy and Charlene are both doing well. Charlene and her husband have three children.

The Mt. Pleasant and Hiquera Road areas have really been built out. According to Tony and Dan Geroci, the traffic and crime have really gotten bad. They even had a drug related murder at the bus stop where a guy was dumped out of a car.

Andrade Continued

Well, it was sure great to spend some time with the Andrades. Tony is carrying on Gus's tradition of tending to the land with Avocado trees, 4 different variety of figs, and he was able to produce pistachios from their trees for the very first time. He also maintains the trellis and grapevines which always frame their sunset views so nicely.

If you want to drop them a line, I KNOW Veronica would enjoy hearing from any and all Bauers. (They told us that they often talk about us and hoped that one of us would one day stop by) Their address is 3809 Higuera Road San Jose, CA 95148. Phone: (408)238–3822

Honolulu Marathon

Annie's Marathon is fast approaching. It is scheduled for 12-9-01 and starts at 5 AM. Curly has been training for the last 3 months and is really geared up for the tough challenge ahead. Mary and Mark are traveling to Hawaii to help cheer Annie on (and to snorkel). If you can’t make the trip you can still cheer Annie on by going to www.honoluluMarathon.com. That site is beaming a live feed of the event via Webcam! If you miss the WebCast, this site will provide some online photos of the event. Best of luck Ann!

Bauer Christmas Location

Annie has volunteered to host Christmas unless someone else would like a turn. If anyone else was planning to host a Bauer Christmas gathering please let Annie know ASAP (and the rest of the family too!). Otherwise, everyone is invited to Annie’s house for Christmas. Curlie will send out invites soon if no one else steps up to the plate.
